Judge in Argentina Rules Gay Couple Can Marry

A judge in Argentina has reportedly ruled that Jose Maria Di Bello and Alex Freyre can marry, Reuters reports:

"An Argentine judge has granted a homosexual couple permission to get married, setting a precedent that could pave the way for the Catholic country to become the first in Latin America to allow same-sex marriage. This week's ruling by Judge Gabriela Seijas in Buenos Aires, which became the region's first city to approve civil unions between same sex couples in 2002, may increase pressure on lawmakers to debate a gay marriage bill currently deadlocked in Congress. 'The law should treat everyone with the same respect according to their singularities, without the need to understand or regulate them,' Seijas said in her ruling, which could still be overturned by city authorities. The couple, Alex Freyre and Jose Maria Di Bello, said in a statement posted on a gay rights Internet site that the decision would allow them to become 'the first gay couple in Latin America to get the right to marry.'"

okay, Don, I'll try to add a few lines to the song...(my lyrics)
all through my wild days, my mad existance
I kept my promise (to find a guy to fu*k me)
He kept his distance (when I got pregnant)

So I chose freedom (to be an unwed mother)
I had to let it happen(& find a way to make some money)
But nothing impressed me (except the way people donate)
( So I started a group filled with bigotry and hate)
And as for fortune and as for fame
(I sat in front of congress but didn't complain, I didn't disclose the Mormon contributions or give their names)
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
( Unlike my friend Carrie Precumm, all dressed up in moo moos)
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at (Lane Bryant)
Don't cry for me dear fat Maggie, the truth is.....

Gay Unions is the way to go
not Marriage We could have it by now but some Leftist Liberals cannot let it go

It is hard to overcome large masses of the ignorant, especially when many of them have blind religious devotion. Uruguay is a relatively small, cosmopolitan country. This is like California as compared to Massachusetts (and that went well), along with the magic-word difference.

Gay UNIONS, but not "marriage" (apparently, the Catholics want to keep their death grip on that word, lol)
11/15/2009 7:34 AM -
Fred

Uruguay has a gay unions law, does it not?
11/15/2009 7:24 AM -
Doug

Actually, Fred- this is quite an accomplishment for a Latin American country

Argentina is often referred to as "second world." It is less developed and less stable than most NATO countries for instance.

It may not be as bad as Mexico, but even though there are sophisticated, established areas of Mexico, it's still pretty obvious when you cross the border that you're not in as economically viable of a place. This is what I've been told at least. I myself have only been to Caribbean countries, where I got I similar impression.

do people consider Argentina "less civilized" ?
11/15/2009 4:47 AM -

I hope someday this emancipation would come to the USA, it's incredible that counries considered "less civilized" than the birthcountry of democracy would still being reluctant to provide all their citizens this right

They do seem very sweet together, my guess is he just couldn't tell them no.

I don't think the judge is in the Catholic church. Even though a lot of them are Catholic, I just think most South Americans aren't too interested in being puritanical or in fighting anti-gay culture wars.

Mazel tov, boys! Hopefully this does cause a positive trend in the Catholic church, although I won't hold my breath on that one...
