Trenton, New Jersey - New details are emerging about the murky relationship between New Jersey's gay governor and the man reported to have been his lover with a new name being added to the mix, that of former FBI Director Louis Freeh.

When Gov. Gov. James E. McGreevey appointed Golan Cipel, an Israeli citizen, to the highly sensitive job of advising the governor on homeland security for the state it raised eyebrows. The job paid $110,000 a year and Cipel, a poet, had no qualifications in either security or terrorism.

Now it has been learned that in giving Cipel the job McGreevey rejected a deal worked out by his own administration to give the job to Freeh.

The former FBI Director had offered to serve McGreevey without a salary, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Freeh, is a Jersey City native and Rutgers University graduate. He headed the FBI from 1993 to 2001. Under former President Bill Clinton, he presided over successful investigations of Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, and Oklahoma City bombers Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.

McGreevey "turned down one of the best homeland security experts the country has ever turned out," said Assemblyman Bill Baroni (R-Mercer).

The Star-Ledger, quoting a Republican consultant with firsthand knowledge of the situation, reports that McGreevey was approached during the 2001 gubernatorial campaign by then-Acting Gov. Donald DiFrancesco about Freeh's willingness to accept the post.

But, in a surprise move in January 2002, after winning the gubernatorial election, McGreevey nominated Cipel.

Three months into the job, and as Assembly members on both sides of the isle began to question Cipel's qualification and why he had been unable to secure an FBI clearance to see sensitive intelligence, he was reassigned as a "special adviser," with no change in salary.

"He's certainly not someone in my mind you would take seriously. We never saw him involved in anything," Assemblyman John Burzichelli, vice chairman of the Assembly Homeland Security Committee told the paper. "I only saw him as a friend (of McGreevey) who got appointed. As far as I was concerned, I saw it as a political patronage appointment."

The latest revelations come as pressure increases on McGreevey to leave office immediately. Last week the governor came out publicly and announced "I am a gay American" saying he had had "a consensual" relationship with another man. (story)

Cipel told an Israeli newspaper on Sunday that he is not gay and had to defend himself from McGreevey's advances, but the Associated Press quoting unnamed sources reported that Cipel originally wanted a $50 million payment to avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit, then asked for the governor's help in developing a private medical college.
