Mehlman 'Outed' by Bill Maher; Steps Down as RNC Chair
November 10, 2006
by Ross von Metzke

Los Angeles, CA - He started with Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, and after outing the long rumored-to-be-gay politician in a segment that was cut from Wednesday night’s Larry King Live, Real Time host Bill Maher vowed to out more Republicans on tonight’s broadcast of his HBO political satire show.

In a transcript taken from the gay blog Towle Road, Maher goes into further detail, explaining that there are a few Republicans in Washington everybody knows about but doesn’t really discuss.

Hours later, Mehlman announced he's be stepping down as the RNC Chair in January, according to Reuters, citing the Democrat takeover of the House and Senate earlier this week as his reason.

Rumors of Mehlman’s sexuality were first called into question in an article in GQ Magazine in 2005, according to AlterNet.com. While the RNC quickly denied the rumors, when asked directly, Mehlman has repeatedly dodged the question.

At a White House Correspondents Dinner in May, Mehlman came out as a heterosexual, so to speak. According to a video obtained by Towle Road, Mehlman addressed the crowd, saying: “I’m not gay, but these stories did a number on my dating life for six months.”

Mehlman found himself the subject of further scandal this summer when it was revealed the RNC had received large donations from Nicholas T. Boyias, who is listed as the owner and CEO of Marina Pacific Distributors, one of the nation’s largest distributors of gay porn, according to the Weblog Talking Points Memo.

While Maher assures Larry King that he won’t be the first to out these men, he’s likely to be the most visible. Since hosting the late night talk show Politically Incorrect in the late ’90s, Maher has become one of the most trusted liberal.

Here is the official transcript of Maher’s conversation with King, which was cut from the live telecast but ran on Huffington Post and Towle Road and other online publications.

Bill Maher: A lot of the chiefs of staff, the people who really run the underpinnings of the Republican Party, are gay. I don’t want to mention names, but I will Friday night...

Larry King: You will Friday night?

BM: Well, there’s a couple of big people who I think everyone in Washington knows who run the Republican...

LK: You will name them?

BM: Well, I wouldn’t be the first. I’d get sued if I was the first. Ken Mehlman. Okay, there’s one I think people have talked about. I don’t think he’s denied it when he’s been, people have suggested, he doesn’t say...

LK: I never heard that. I’m walking around in a fog. I never...Ken Mehlman? I never heard that. But the question is...

BM: Maybe you don’t go to the same bathhouse I do, Larry.

Real Time with Bill Maher airs at 11/10c Friday nights on HBO.

I think its funny that the one person to have an issue with outing public figures has a screename like MascJockATL...I bet you are very "straight-acting." What makes it wrong to out someone exactly?

A while after Ken became Chairman...rumors about him being gay began to surface. So, I made some inquiries to fellow gay Republicans...who work in DC. Apparently, his orientation was fairly common knowledge amongst ALL Republicans.

This is a parody of a Ford ad on Ken Mehlman, which was post about a week ago:

I too...support outing public figures (whether they be politicians, evangelists or celebrities)!

Who cares? We should all care, and we shouldn't feel bad for him either, because fucking Ken Mehlman has been working against his own kind, including you RJ, for sometime now like the hypocritical bastard that he is. Bill Maher rocks in my opinion and I'm elated that he outed little Kenny.

What I am surprised by, however, is that CNN, in turn, censored the CNN piece featuring Maher's comments aired on Larry King live. Yes, they actually issued a cease order (via Youtube.com) to John Aravosis of Americablog.com, who raised the issue, as a result of the YouTube.com videos he posted on his website, Americablog.com. Don’t believe me? Check out his blog since it’s all posted there.

It's pathetic that little Kenny not only worked against his homo-peeps, but he also worked along side his repuli-thugs to take away our freedoms as well as our free speech. So, I guess little Kenny got what he deserved in the end despite the censorship move pressuring CNN and Youtube.com.

By the way, Bill says he's not gay....but I've always wondered....but who cares?

I'm with you, Ryan....I LOVE Bill Maher. I never miss his show...not since it began. And I did watch this interview with Larry King...

Hmmm... this is a tough one. On one hand, each of us should be able to disclose our sexuality when and where we are comfortable. On the other hand, someone in a position to influence public policy shouldn't be able to have their cake and eat it too. I guess I feel bad for Mehlman, but am glad to see heteros forced to face what homos can and are contributing.

to those like Jim below who say outing anyone is wrong---being gay is not a crime. It's not a sin. There's nothing wrong with being gay. Therefore, what's wrong with outing someone? Its the same if he were to say ken mehlman wears colored contacts. who cares

Outing hypocrites and those who act one way to hurt our cause and another behind closed doors (read Rev. Ted Haggard) is exposing hypocrisy and is required if our community is going to stand up to these a-holes.

I LOVE Bill Maher. I don't always agree with him, but he's always a breath of fresh air in a media environment sorely lacking in truly intelligent personalities.

Outing today, outing tomorrow, outing forever.
