Vampire Diaries Writer Wants Gay Character On Show

Openly gay writer Kevin Williamson reveals that he wants to see a gay character on his show, The Vampire Diaries. But it won't be somone currently on the show (sorry Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder fans), but a new character. Williamson says: "I don't want to do a coming-out story."

According to Blastr:

"It's one of those things that needs to feel organic and seamless," Williamson told a group of reporters on July 28 in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was at The CW's party for the Television Critics Association press tour. "I don't want it to be a character that comes in and is a one-off. I want someone to come in and have a reason and a purpose and really push that story forward the way I want to do it, and they're so important to the story that without them the show won't happen. That's what I want."

Gay teens are an important issue to Williamson outside of show business. He supports GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. "I'm sitting in the wings waiting," he said. "I'm waiting. Which character can be gay? Which character won't? Where will it fit in? How can I get the gay character in? I don't want to sound like I'm a militant about it, like THERE MUST BE A GAY CHARACTER, even though I am. It's not just that, it's also diversity. I always feel like I don't have enough diversity on my show, and that is one of the things I'm very conscientious of, and not just gay characters. Any diversity. In anything, I want everyone represented. I want everybody on the show."

And if it ends up being a male character, the actor who portrays him better get used to not wearing a shirt.

That would be interesting to see how that works. I did watch the show when it first aired and found it somewhat boring, so I stopped watching. If they add a gay character, it just may give it that edge it was missing.

A gay character would be great but not because the show needs one, it would just be nice to see us represented. NOt like vampires are picky on who they eat, so I dont see it being too dififcult, then again im not a writter so I dont really know.

this show is definitely alot of fun, a gay character would add so much life...how about the brooding little brother of the female lead? he would be perrrrfect for a troubled closet case

Yes the show needs a revamp. I still have the second part of the first season on my dvr. It has potential but yes the characters are not that diverse sort of reminds me of Dawson Creek meets TWILIGHT. I am sure i will watch it though. Hopefully he can balance it out.

I love Kevin Williamson -- he is one of the best writers of a generation. He wrote Scream, Scream 2, Dawson's Creek, The Faculty, Halloween H20 (not the screenplay...just the treatment), I Know What You Did Last Summer (not the screenplay...just the treatment), Vampire Diaries, and the upcoming Scream 4.

He is brilliant with teen thrillers with a slightly intellectual twist. Brilliant! My favorite writer of all time.

Wow, I would really love this, it would actually give me a reason to get interested in the show, because up until now, and yes, I have been following the show, it has been VERY boring to me. I think this would be a fresh, interesting, and very diverse twist to the show.
